Signals from the retina (the seeing film) are transmitted via the optic nerve to the areas of the brain that process visual information. Diseases of the optic nerve can lead to blindness. Many conditions can affect the optic nerves.
- Optic neuritis: Inflammation of the optic nerves is called optic neuritis. There are many causes of optic neuritis including infections and immunologic. Symptoms include loss of vision, discomfort, and pain with eye movement. Optic neuritis can occur in patients with Multiple Sclerosis and often can be the presenting sign of Multiple Sclerosis. Diagnosis involves a detailed examination as well as formal visual field testing, blood tests, and MRI.

Most commonly this occurs with age and in patients with hypertension or diabetes. It can also occur with a disease called Temporal Arteritis. Viagra or Sildenafil use has been associated with Ischemic Optic neuropathy. Detailed examination as well as in office diagnostic tests, MRI and blood tests are required for diagnosis.
